Manners

There are quite a number of things you should be aware of while in Korea. And the most basic one, is manners. 




Acceptable/ Normal
  • Asking for someone's age or marital status when you first meet them.
  • Spitting and coughing phlegm in public.
  • Bumping into someone on the streets and not apologizing. (It's crowded.)
  • Riding motorbikes/bicycle with no helmets.
  • Not leaving tips.
  • If you are out with someone older than you or someone of a higher ranking, let them start to eat first before you start.
  • If your companion is older/ a higher rank than you, face side-ways before you drink. 
Weird/ Improper
  • Low-cut shirts
  • Excessive show of affection in public
  • Tattoos (especially huge ones.) 
  • Certain hand gestures.
  • Blowing your nose while eating
Considered Polite
  • Taking food/money/items with two hands
  • Pouring drinks for other people
  • When someone is pouring a drink for you, accept it with both hands.
  • Small nod of the head to say hi
  • Removing shoes before entering someones house (and some restaurants if required.)
